What is Bouldering?

Bouldering is a type of rock climbing at low level, usually above crash mats. This means you are without the hindrance of equipment normally associated with roped climbing. The climber can then mainly focus on the techniques and movements, which makes it easier to gain entry into the activity. The huge popularity of bouldering has led to the creation of Indoor Bouldering Walls, which provide all-season (yup, there’s no rain indoors!) participation for this growing sport. No matter what your level of experience or fitness, it provides an exciting and fun way to exercise mind, body and soul.

Is it safe?

At The Climbing Station our climbing area is covered with industry standard crash pads that provide protection for you when descending from the wall. The height of the bouldering wall conforms to the European Safety Standard for bouldering walls, although we always recommend that you climb down, rather than jump off. We provide all the basic safety information to new climbers and our induction course will provide you with additional safety information about how to use our bouldering wall.

Can anyone have a go?

The Climbing Station caters for all levels – from total beginners to elite level climbers. We pride ourselves on being a friendly team who will give a warm welcome to all newcomers. We have huge variety of problems dedicated to new climbers, so that you can get climbing the moment you step in the door. In addition there is a wide range of problems throughout the centre to help you advance all the way to top levels.

If you are new to bouldering, then the safest and easiest way to get going is through one of our induction sessions. Our staff will introduce you to the centre and to the sport of bouldering, so that you can get the most out of your sessions. Alternatively, you use the centre as a “guest” if you are accompanied by an experienced climber. Kids can get climbing through our dedicated kids courses.

Route Setting (we got 99 problems so you should find 1)

Okay, we actually have about 350 to go at.

We are renowned for our frequency of route setting at The Climbing Station. We generally reset a whole circuit of around 30 problems every week. Tuesday mornings are the usual hold stripping day and Wednesday mornings are the usual setting day. We close off small sections of the wall at a time, then once finished we quickly move on and reopen that section so you will not have a problem getting on problems. All setting and testing is usually done and good to go by 4 pm. So, if you climb in the morning as we set, be warned, we may come along later and change a problem you have done; which if you think about it is better value for you as you get another new problem!
